What causes snoring and sleep apnea?
Snoring and sleep apnea are two sleep conditions wherein the airway becomes obstructed (often because of the position of the jaw or tongue) and breathing becomes interrupted. They are troublesome afflictions for both those who have them and those who have to listen to them. People who either snore or have sleep apnea may make loud, obnoxious noises in their sleep.
Snoring
Snoring, although annoying, is more of a nuisance than anything. Many people snore and do not even know it. It’s often a problem for those who have to listen to the snoring and not necessarily for the person who snores.
Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is a much more serious condition. Where snoring is simply the vibration of tissues while a sleeping person breathes, sleep apnea is categorized by lapses in breathing and is much more severe. Those with sleep apnea are often at a higher risk to themselves because they may not be getting adequate oxygen intake while they sleep. Sleep apnea can be so intense that it wakes up not only those nearby, but those with sleep apnea themselves. Although it is usually audible and disruptive, people with sleep apnea do not always make noise. This is especially dangerous because those with the affliction may still lack proper oxygen intake, but since they do not make noise their sleep apnea may go undiagnosed. It is possible for cases of sleep apnea to go undiagnosed for far too long.
